Make it a sweet start to your day with these chocolate pancakes! Top with your favorite maple syrup or go all out with whipped cream, chocolate sauce, and berries.

Whenever my kids have an extra day off school, they make sure to put in a request the night before for pancakes.
Who can say no? After all, we only have a few more years together before they head off on their own, so whipping up a batch of pancakes is a no-brainer for me. Add in chocolate and now you’ve got their dream breakfast.
These double chocolate pancakes are just as simple as plain buttermilk pancakes, but are so much much more festive and fun. We add cocoa powder of course, but then I also mix in mini chocolate chips to make sure there’s melty bits in each bite.

Ingredients for chocolate pancakes
Full list of ingredients including quantities is located in the recipe card.
You’ll need:
- All-purpose flour
- Unsweetened cocoa powder – Any variety of cocoa powder will work for pancakes, so use what you have on hand.
- Granulated sugar
- Baking powder
- Baking soda
- Salt
- Milk – I use 2% milk here. If you want to use buttermilk, remember that it is a bit thicker, so you might need to add a little more to the batter to get the right consistency.
- Vanilla
- Eggs
- Melted butter
- Mini chocolate chips – If you don’t have or can’t find mini chocolate chips at the store, you can absolutely use regular chocolate chips! I prefer the minis because they disperse better in the batter and have less risk of burning on the griddle. You can always chop regular chocolate chips into smaller pieces.
How to make this recipe
Grab a large mixing bowl and combine the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk until evenly mixed.
In a medium bowl, add the milk, eggs, and vanilla. Whisk until blended and lightly frothy.
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and mix well. You don’t want the batter to be completely smooth; just make sure there are no dry bits remaining.
Let the batter rest for at least 15 minutes. This will help the flour absorb some of the liquid and develop the gluten for a fluffier pancake.
While the batter is resting, melt the butter in a microwave-safe bowl and set aside to cool.
When you’re ready to cook, preheat an electric griddle to 350ยฐF or set a skillet over medium heat on the stove. You shouldn’t need to grease the electric griddle, but if you’re using a skillet you might need a bit of butter or nonstick spray in the pan.
If your pancakes are browning too quickly, lower the heat to 325ยฐF/medium-low. Monitor each batch of pancakes to determine if you need to raise or lower the temperature.
Pour the melted butter and chocolate chips into the pancake batter and mix well.
Using a 1/3 cup measuring cup, scoop the batter onto the preheated griddle or pan. Repeat as you have space.
Cook the pancakes for a few minutes, until the edges look dry and bubbles have formed on the top. Flip and cook another 1-2 minutes, until browned on the bottom. Transfer cooked pancakes to a plate and set in the microwave or low oven to keep warm, and repeat until all batter is used.
Serve with your favorite pancake toppings!
