Save money and make your own homemade seasoning salt using common pantry ingredients. It’s a versatile blend you can use for so many dishes!
Seasoning salt is a pantry standard, especially in the Midwest, but did you know you can whip it up yourself?
You probably already have everything you need to make your very own seasoning salt. Just like with other homemade spice blends like taco seasoning or seafood seasoning, it’s made with common ingredients already in your pantry.
We love to use this blend for seasoning burgers, scrambled eggs, popcorn, Chex mix, and more. It really is a versatile blend that works with so many dishes, so you’ll be reaching for it again and again.
Ingredients for seasoning salt
Full list of ingredients including quantities is located in the recipe card.
You’ll need:
- Salt
- Ground black pepper
- Paprika
- Garlic powder
- Ground cayenne pepper
- Onion powder
- Granulated sugar
I use regular sweet paprika, but you can use hot paprika or even smoked paprika, depending on how you want your blend.
It may be surprising that there is sugar in seasoning salt, but the small amount adds just a touch of sweetness to balance the savory flavors. Of course, you can always leave it out if you prefer.
How to make this recipe
Combine all of the ingredients in a bowl, stirring well to mix.
Transfer to a spice jar or other airtight container. Don’t forget to label it!
The blend will keep for at least 6 months when stored in a cool, dry location like a cupboard or pantry.
When using, make sure to measure rather than pouring directly from your jar into a hot pan, otherwise steam can enter the jar, causing the spices to clump and lose quality faster.
Uses for seasoning salt
You can use this blend on nearly everything!
Try it on bison burgers, sweet potato wedges, or simply sprinkled over a pan of tater tots.
It’s also good on mild fish like tilapia, or mixed into breading for fried catfish.
This is a very versatile seasoning, so make some today!
